This study aims to investigate the contribution of phonologic and semantical similarity of both L1 and L2 to vocabulary learning or teaching. To produce this study, more than 70.000 words, idioms, and technical terms in The English-Turkish Red House Dictionary were scanned and 527 authentic words were ascertained to be similar to their Turkish equivalents (See Appendix A). The focus of this study was on how much the similarity of both L1 and L2 with bilingual (English-Turkish) glosses of vocabulary is beneficial for vocabulary learning. 45 Upper intermediate and 45 elementary learners of English as foreign language participated in the study. 30 experimental and 10 control words were selected via a pretest, which was necessary to be sure that the subjects did not know the meaning of any words in advance. Just after the pretest all the words were explained to the students with their glosses. And then all the subjects were tested on recall and recognition of 40 target vocabulary items both immediately and after three weeks. Finally 4 weeks later they underwent a recognition test. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that glossing with the phonological and semantical similarity has an extremely positive effect on vocabulary learning. However, it reminded that students forget the words over time to a great extend if this learning is not reinforced.
