Çalışma, Doğu Yahudilerini modernleştirmek ve geliştirmek amacıyla 1860 yılında Paris'te kurulan Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU) teşkilatının İstanbul'da açmış olduğu okulları ele almaktadır. Yenileştirmenin aracını ?eğitimin modernleştirilmesi? olarak belirleyen AIU, Ortadoğu ve Kuzey Afrika'da çok sayıda okul açmış ve Doğu Yahudilerini Batılılaştırma yolunda önemli adımlar atmıştır. AIU'nin faaliyetlerinin esas sahasını Osmanlı Devleti'nin toprakları oluşturmuştur. Yapılan bu tez çalışmasında da, bir dönem Avrupa'nın en kalabalık Yahudi cemaatini barındıran İstanbul'da açılan AIU okulları ve faaliyetleri mercek altına alınmış ve etkileri irdelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Üç bölümden oluşan çalışmanın ilk bölümünde, Yahudilerin İstanbul'a yerleşim süreçleriyle toplumsal ve kültürel hayatları işlenmiş, geleneksel Yahudi eğitim sistemi üzerinde durulmuş ve ilk modern Yahudi okullarının kuruluş süreci hakkında kısa bilgi verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, AIU'in kuruluşu, faaliyetleri ve genel politikası açıklanmıştır. Sonra İstanbul'da açılan AIU okulları anlatılmış ve okullar ayrı ayrı başlıklar halinde incelenmiştir. Üçüncü bölüm, AIU okullarının Yahudi cemaatine etkilerini ele alıp bu okulların Türk toplumunu da etkileyen yönlerine değinilmiştir.
The subject of this study discusses the schools in Istanbul to modernize and improve the Eastern Jews which was established by Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU) that was organized in Paris in 1860. The AIU defined the main means of modernization as ?modernization of the education? and established many schools in The Middle East and North Africa and took the important steps in westernizing the Eastern Jews. The territories of Otoman Empire formed the main field of the activities of the AIU. In this thesis, it is examined the schools and activities of AIU which were established in Istanbul where was the cradle for Jewish community which was the most crowded population of Europe in a period. And besides this, it is examined their impact. In the first part of the work which consists of three parts, it is duscussed the process of the settlement of the Jews in Istanbul and their social and cultural life. Besides this, it is focused on the traditional Jewish education system and is given breaf information about the process of establishment of the first Jewish schools. In the second, it is discussed the establishment of AIU and its activities and general policy. Then, it is focused on the schools of AIU and they were examined separately. The third part is focused on the impact of the schools of AIU on the Jewish community of Turkey and besides this their impact on the general population of Turkey.
