In this study Sporopollenin has been chemicaly modified to give two novel adsorbents : Xanthate-Sporopollenin (Xan-Sp) and Diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC- Sp). These two new adsorbents were evaluated for the adsorption of Cu (II), Pb (II) and Cd (II) metal ions. Adsorption conditions of Cu (II), Pb (II) and Cd (II) metal ions were optimized for all those three adsorbents. Experimental data were exploited for kinetic and thermodynamic evaluations related to the adsorption processes. Cu (II), Pb (II) and Cd (II) adsoption processes followed the Freundlich type adsorption isotherms for Sporopollenin whereas those metal ions followed Langmuir IV type adsorption isotherms for both Xan-Sp and DTC-Sp. Adsorption c apacities of Xan-Sp and DTC-Sp for all metal ions studied were found to be much higher than the original supporting polimeric structure sporopollenin. Experimental data were also evaluated to find out kinetic characterictics of the adsorption process. Adsorption processes for three target heavy metal ions onto sporopollenin, Xan-Sp, and DTC-Sp were found to follow pseudo-second order type adsorption kinetics. Intraparticle diffusion process was found to take part in adsorption processes but it could not be accepted as the primary rate determining step. Adsorption mechanism for all three adsorbents was explained as an ion- exchange process. But it was observed that chelating effect is also playing an important role in the adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) metal ions on Sporopollenin, Xan-Sp and DTC-Sp. Thermodynamic parameters, AH0, AS0 and AG0 were calculated from graphical interpretation of the experimental data. Standard heat of adsorption (AH0) were found to be endothermic for all adsorption processes. AG0 values indicated that adsorption process for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) on Sporopollenin, Xan-Sp and DTC- Sp is spontaneous. Calculated AS0 values were found to be positive for all adsorption processes.
