Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are used in various purposes such as dielectric liquids, cooling oil, in hydraulic and heat transfer jystems, in vacuum pumps, in paints, inks, adhesives, in immersion oils, cutting oils and lubricants and in pesticides until 1970. However, due to the persistence and toxic properties of PCBs, they are considered as priority pollutants of environment and their use are being restricted. In this work wastewater samples were collected from 12 points in sewerage system, from general outlet of the sewerage system and from different points of mam drainage channel. In the analyses of PCBs* United States Environmental Protection Agency's method 8082 is used. PCBs extracted from wastewater by using solid phase extraction cartridges. Wastewater samples were analyzed for PCBs such as PCB 28, PCB 52, PCB 101, PCB 138, PCB 153 and PCB 180. Recovery ratios were determined between % 78 and % 93 with the analyses of fortified samples. Hewlett- Packard 5890 series II gas chromatograph (GC) with split/ splitless injector and electron capture detector (ECD) was used. DB-5 capillar column (30 m long, 0.25 mm I.D«, 0.25 um film thickness) was employed in the analyses. PCB contents of wastewater of Konya are changed between 0-1.3 ug/ L for PCB 28, 0.007-2.3 jig/ L for PCB 52, 0-0.6 ug/ L for PCB 101, 0-0.9 ug/ L for PCB 138, 0-0.7 ug/ L for PCB 153 and 0-0.6 ug/ L for PCB 180. Possible sources of PCBs in wastewater and some measures for preventing discharges of these substances were also considered.
