The objective of this study is the removal of synthetic dyes (Methylene Blue (MB), Congo Red (CR) and methyl orange (MO)) from aqueous solutions by adsorption technique using olive pomace that has a potential to be a low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbent. Characterization of the adsorbent material was carried out by Scanning Electron Microscope, FT-IR and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrophotometers (EDX). Aqueous solutions of dyes with different initial concentrations (100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500 and 5000 mg. L-1) were used in experimental studies. Experimental media were prepared by the addition of 10 mL of each of these solutions and known amounts of olive pomace (0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25 g) into erlenmeyers. Effects of contact time, temperature, aqueous phase pH value, dye concentration and adsorbent dose on the process were investigated in adsorptive studies performed at constant agitation rate. In addition, thermodynamics of the system was also investigated as well as kinetics and isotherms. The equilibration times were close to each other (180-210 minutes) for the adsorption of all three types of the synthetic dyes studied. The effect of the initial pH of the aqueous phase was observed to be negligible. Therefore, the pH of the stock solutions was not adjusted. Kinetic studies showed that the kinetic data was in agreement with the pseudo second order kinetic model for all three types of the synthetic dyes. In isotherm studies, adsorption of Methylene Blue was observed to be well explained by Langmuir isotherm model; while that of Methyl Orange and Congo Red by Freundlich isotherm model. The effect of the temperature was observed to be in the negative direction; but negligible. The thermodynamic parameters; ΔG° value was calculated to be positive; while ΔH° ve ΔS° were negative. In this master thesis, availability of the olive pomace for the adsorption of the synthetic dyes and their removal from aqueous solutions was demonstrated.
