This study was conducted in the Experimental Station of Field Crops Central Research Institute, Ankara, during 2006 growth period to determine the effect of different sowing times on some agricultural properties and biodiesel quality of three varieties of safflower (Yenice, Dincer, Remzibey) under dryland agricultural conditions. The treatments consisted of 3 varieties (Yenice, Dincer, and Remzibey) and 3 different sowing times (March 28, April 27, and May 25) with 3 replicates in accordance with randomized split block. The sowing was performed in the plots of 5.4 m x 1.6 m dimensions, with 10 cm spacing on the planting rows and 40 cm spacing between the rows. At the end of the research period, mean seed production of each variety was found as 40.11 kg/da for Yenice, 46.11 kg/da for Dincer, and 50.33 kg/da for Remzibey. The mean of the number of head per plant was found as 10.11 for Yenice, 9.44 for Dincer, and 11.67 for Remzibey. The mean of the number of seed per head was recorded was 27.78 seeds for Yenice, 25.89 seeds for Dincer, and 49.56 seeds for Remzibey varieties. The mean plant height was observed 47.22 cm for Yenice, 52.44 cm for Dincer, and 74.78 cm for Remzibey. The raw oil content ranged from 17.9 to 21.5% for Yenice, from 18.4 to 23.6% for Dincer, and from 20.0-25.3% for Remzibey. The fatty acid analyses of the varieties showed that oleic acid, linoleik acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid contents were found 11.25%, 72.98%, 6.12%, and 2.15% for Yenice; 11.96%, 77.02%, 5.85%, and 2.11% for Dincer; and 37.18%, 48.50%, 6.17%, and 2.27% for Remzibey varieties, respectively. The extracted oil from the seeds was converted to biodiesel to determine oil content and fatty acid compositions. The biodiesels were compared according to the standards of TS EN 14214. Fatty acid compositions of the biodiesels significantly varied depending on the varieties. It was determined that the contents of oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid were 12.34%, 73.66%, 6.29%, and 2.15 % for Yenice; 12.16%, 76.90%, 6.04%, and 2.16 % for Dincer; and 38.18%, 48.60%, 6.05%, and 2.23 % for Remzibey, respectively. In conclusion, in the cases of the high quality biodiesel production according to the TS EN 14214 quality control standards, the Remzibey variety could be recommended.
