Bir kurum olarak, gymnasiumun ilk kez Dor'lar tarafından İ.Ö. VII. yy.'da kurulduğu bilinmektedir. Büyük olasılıkla gymnasium düşüncesi Girit ve Sparta'dan Atina'ya, daha sonra da tüm Grek toplumuna geçmiş ve kültürel etkileşim sonucu Anadolu'da da çok sayıda inşa edilmiştir. Antik dönemde gymnasiumlar: beden eğitimine, felsefe derslerinin verilmesine ve spordan sonra yapılan vücut bakımına hizmet etmektedir. Hellenistik dönemde gymnasium, kent içerisinde bir kamu binasıyken, özellikle Roma imparatorluk döneminde hem kamu binası olarak hem de Romalı zengin yurttaşların süslü villalarında bir bölüm olarak karşımıza çıkar. Toplumu pek çok konuda bir araya getiren, etrafında tapınak, hamam, meclis, çeşme vb. yapıların bulunduğu mekan, kentin gymnasiumudur. Bu noktalardan hareketle, bu çalışmada; antik dönem yerleşimlerinde gymnasiumun işlevleri, özellikle kentin bütünüyle olan etkileşimi incelenmiştir. Antik dönem de gymnasiumun önemini incelerken çalışma alanı olarak, Anadolu'da Hellenistik dönemin en büyük gymnasiumuna sahip Pergamon antik kenti seçilmiştir. Pergamon krallıkla yönetilen, eğimli arazide yerleşik bir dağ kentidir, Roma ile kurduğu yakın ilişkilerle Hellenistik dönemin en güçlü krallıklarından biri haline gelmiştir. Materyal olarak seçilen bu kentin gymnasiumunun irdelenmesiyle, antik dönem de gymnasiumun önemini açıklayan sonuçlarla araştırma tamamlanmıştır. As an institution, It is known that Gymnasium are founded for the first time by Dorians in 7th Century BC. Most likely the idea of Gymnasium spreads from Crete (Girit) and Sparta to Athens, and then it spreads to the whole Greek society and as a result of cultural interaction, it was built in a large number in Anatolia. Gymnasiums in ancient times served for physical education, philosophy classes and body cares after sports. Whereas Gymnasium in the Hellenistic age was just a public building in the city, it appeared as both public buildings and decorated villas of rich citizens especially in the period of the Roman Empire. Gymnasium of the city was a place which brought community together in many areas and there were temples, baths, assembly, and fountains etc. around it.Consequently, Function ofGymnasium in ancient settlements and its interaction especially within the city are examined. While examining the importance of Gymnasium in ancient period, ancient city of Pergamon which has the greatest gymnasium in Anatolia in the Hellenistic period was chosen as a studying area. Ruled by a kingdom, Pergamon is a settled and mountain city in sloping area. By the help of its close relations with Rome, it has become one of the most powerful kingdoms of the Hellenistic period. Examining the ancient city of Pergamon's gymnasium which is chosen as a material, the research is completed with the results which explains the significance of the gymnasium in Hellenistic period.
