The saturation cycle can be used to approximate the expansion process to the saturated liquid line and the compression process to the saturated vapor line in vapor compression refrigeration / heat pump systems. The exergetic analysis of the saturation cycle, which is intended to be used to reduce the irreversibility of the compressor and the throttle valve, was performed using Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software. R410A was selected as the working fluid. The change in the total amount of irreversibility of the system, the change in the amount of irreversibility of each cycle component and the change in exergy efficiency of the system were examined according to the number of stages. The variation of exergy efficiency with evaporator and condenser temperatures was investigated in saturation cycles. Different fluids having low global warming potential that can be used in saturation cycles were studied comparatively. According to the obtained results, it was found that when the system was modified from the single stage system to the two-stage system, the irreversibility fell at the highest level and accordingly the exergy efficiency increased at the highest rate. It was determined that if the saturation cycles were applied the irreversibilities would decrease most in the compressor and then in the throttle valve. In terms of exergy efficiency and coefficient of performance, saturation cycles were found to be more advantageous in systems operating in cooling mode. It was established that the exergy efficiency increased when the evaporator temperature increased or the condenser temperature decreased. It was found that higher energetic and exergetic performance enhancement can be ensured in refrigerant cycle with higher pressure ratio.
