A Moon for the Misbegotten ve A View from the Bridge oyunlarında sevginin ölçüsü: James Tyrone, Eddie Carbone örnekleri

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Eugene O'Neill'in A Moon Jor the Misbegotten ile Arthur Miller'ın A View /rom the Bridge oyunlanndaki James Tyrone ve Eddie Carbone adlı iki karakterin sevgi kavramını algılayışları incelenmiştir. Her iki oyunda da sevgiyi kavrama biçimleri olaylann gelişmesinin temelini oluşturan itici güçtür. Oyun kişilerinin sevgilerini denetleyememesi, dolayısıyla aşırıya kaçmaları kötü sonuçları beraberinde getirmiştir. İnsanın tutkusunun ihtirasa dönüşmesiyle 'çok sevmek' ve 'aşırı sevmek' kavramları arasındaki fark, yazarlar tarafından bu karakterlerle somutlaştırılmıştır. Sevgileriyle yakından ilintisi olan 'uzlaşı sapma' ölçütü James Tyrone ve Eddie Carbone'un diğer oyun kişileri ile ilişkilerinde belirleyici bir öğedir. Karakterlerin kendi içlerinde kurdukları dizgeler ile dış dünyanın, yani içinde yaşadıkları toplumun dizgesiyle uzlaşmaları veya uzlaşır gibi görünmeleri, son zamanlardaki çatışkıları, başka bir deyişle dış dünyanın düzeninden ne kadar saptıkları ve bu sapmaların sonuçları ifade edilmiştir. Hissettikleri toplum baskısının yanı sıra, karakterlerin diğer psikolojik durumları da, oyunlardaki belli sahneler aracılığıyla karşılaştırma ve eklektik (çoğulcu) yöntem ışığında gösterilmeye ç.alışılmıştır.

In thls study, two characters, one from O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten and the other from Miller's A View from the Bridge; Tyrone's and Eddie's perception of the notion of love has been analyzed. in both plays their attitude towards conceiving the concept of love is the essential impulse for the development of the events. The characters' inability to control and manipulate their love has brought calamities wlth it. The slight difference between the notions of 'passionate' and 'ambilious' love as a result of man's passion's transfonning into ambition has been exemplified with these. characters. The criterion of 'conformity- deviance' as being closely related to their loves is a detennining element in their interactions with dramatis personae of the plays. The characters' former compliances with the system they have created within themselves and that of the outer world in which they live have alsa been stated in this study. Their later conflicts with the outer system and to what extent they have deviated from it lead interesting consequences of this deviance. Besides expressing the pressure of society, by employing comparative and eclectic methods the paper aJso intends to demonstrate other psychological moods these two characters have undergone throughout the p)ays.
