Recently, detailed evaluation of the choroid has become possible with the improvement of the technology of optical coherence tomography (OCT). The aim of the study was to determine subfoveal choroidal thickness of healthy subjects using spectral-domain OCT (SD_OCT, Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) and evaluate the effect of age on subfoveal choroidal thickness measurements. Materials and Methods: One hundred sixty nine emmetropic healthy subjects underwent a detailed ophthalmological examination and subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured using SD_OCT. The choroidal thickness was measured by the same operator as the distance between the posterior border of hyperreflective retinal pigment epithelium and choroidal-scleral junction under central foveal region. The subjects were divided into 5 groups according to age; Group 1 (n = 42): 18-29 years, group 2 (n = 34): 30-39 years, group 3 (n = 33): 40-49 years, group 4 (n = 34): 50-59 years, group 5 (n = 26): 60 years and over. The choroidal thickness values were compared among age groups using ANOVA test and the correlation between subfoveal choroidal thickness and age was evaluated using Pearson's correlation test. P value less than 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: Mean subfoveal choroidal thickness differed significantly among age groups (p <0.05). The highest values were detected in groups 1 and 2 (mean 364.87 and 336.31 micron, respectively), whereas the lowest values were found in groups 4 and 5 (mean 281.97 and 261.25 micron, respectively). There was a statistically significant negative correlation between age and subfoveal choroidal thickness(r= -0.517, p< 0.001). Conclusion: Choroidal thickness has gained importance in the diagnosis and follow-up of various retinal and choroidal diseases. Subfoveal choroidal thickness may differ in various ocular pathologies. In this study, subfoveal choroidal thickness decreases with aging. Therefore, age should be taken into account in studies related to the choroidal thickness.
