Matematik günlük yaşamdaki sorunları çözmek için kullanılan bir araçtır. Ayrıca matematik yetenek isteyen birçok iş için de yararlıdır. Hatta bazı işlerin gerçekleştirilmesinde de ön koşuldur (Baykul, 2005). Zihin engelli öğrencilerin de akranları gibi matematiği öğrenmeleri ve günlük hayatlarında karşılaştıkları sorunlarla başa çıkmaları bu öğrencilerin bağımsız yaşam becerileri kazanmaları için çok önemlidir (Gürsel, 1993; Sarı, 2003; Yıkmış, 2005). Günümüzde zihin engelli öğrencilere matematik, beceri, kavram ve işlemlerin öğretimde etkili ve sistematik öğretim yaklaşımlarının arayışı sürmektedir. Bu bağlamda, özel eğitim sınıflarında çalışan sınıf öğretmenlerinin, zihin engelli öğrencilere matematik dersinde hangi öğretim yöntemlerini kullandıkları ve bu öğrencilere matematik öğretiminde en çok hangi öğretim yöntemlerini kullanmayı tercih ettiklerinin ortaya çıkarılması önem arz etmektedir. Dolayısıyla bu araştırmanın amacı; 1) Özel Eğitim Sınıflarında görev yapan sınıf öğretmenlerinin matematik öğretiminde kullanılan öğretim yöntemlerine ilişkin görüşlerinin neler olduğunu ortaya çıkarmak, 2) Bu konuda ileri araştırma yapanlara temel veri sağlamaktır. Bu araştırmada Nitel Araştırma Yöntemlerinden Görüşme Yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Veri toplamak için araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen `Yarı Yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu' kullanılmıştır. Bu araştırmanın çalışma grubu ise Konya il merkezinde bulunan özel eğitim sınıflarında görev yapan sınıf öğretmenlerinden oluşmaktadır. Araştırma bulgularına göre, özel eğitim sınıflarında çalışan sınıf öğretmenlerinin zihin engelli öğrencilere matematik öğretiminde anlatım yöntemi, rol oynama ve drama yöntemi, soru cevap yöntemi, gösteri yöntemi, problem çözme yöntemi, basamaklandırılmış yöntem ve tartışma yöntemini kullandıkları ortaya çıkmıştır. Buna ek olarak, bu sınıflarda çalışan öğretmenlerin matematik derslerinde en çok rol oynama ve drama yöntemini kullandıkları bundan sonrakilerin en çok kullanılandan en az kullanılana doğru sırasıyla anlatım yöntemi, gösteri yöntemi, problem çözme yöntemi, soru cevap yöntemi ve tartışma yöntemi olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.
Maths is a mean for solving the problems in daily life. It is useful for many jobs and for many professions which require some kind of mathematical abilities. Moreover, it is a precondition in realizing many issues (Baykul, 2005). Mentally retarded children learn maths as their coequals and get over the problems that they encounter in their daily life which is very important for them in order that they can acquire independent life abilities (Gursel, 1993; Sari, 2003; Yikmis, 2005). Many studies on teaching math to children with mental retardation continue for effective and systematical teaching methods. In this context, it is very important to find out which education methods the teachers who work in special education classes use for mentally retarded students in maths lessons and which teaching methods they mostly prefer to use for those students in teaching maths. Therefore, the aim of this study is, 1) to find out the perceptions of teachers who work in special education classes on teaching methods for teaching maths to children with mental retardation, 2) to provide fundamental data for the researchers fot futhrr researches. In this study, interview method -one of the Qualitative Research Methods- was used. A semi-structured Interview technique developed by the researcher was used to collect the data. The sample of this study consisted of twenty nine teachers who work in special education classes for the mentally retarded in Konya city. According to the findings of this study, it was found that the teachers use explaining, roleplaying, questioning, demonstration, problem-solving, step-by-step training and discussion methods for teaching maths to the mentally retarded. It was also found that the teachers use mostly roleplaying and follow these methods; demonstration, problem-solving, questioning and discussion.
